Istanbul has always been one of the most important centers with its geological and geographical situation. Istanbul is located in the middle of a center called “Eurasia” and is like a bridge between Asia and Europe. Istanbul, which is located in Marmara Region and northwest of Turkey, is the biggest city in its region in terms of population. By looking at its proximity to the Balkans, Anatolia, Black Sea and even Africa and Middle East, we can say that Istanbul is a city established where many lands and continents meet.

Istanbul includes part of the Bosphorus strait in its urban area and at the same time it is located in the south of Russia, southeast of Romania and Bulgaria. Istanbul located in the northeast of Athens and north of Salonika is also located in the northeast of Greek Islands. It also situates at the entrance to the Black Sea where the coasts of Europe lie.
Istanbul is surrounded by Kocaeli from the east and Tekirdağ from the west. Istanbul connects the Black Sea at the north with the Sea of Marmara at the south. Istanbul is divided into two parts by the Bosphorus Strait: Asia and Europe. Istanbul is a peninsula surrounded by three seas. Istanbul consists of 39 city districts. While each city is connected each other with highways, only the “Adalar” district is located overseas. “Adalar” is located in the south of Anatolian coasts of Istanbul.
Istanbul which is located on a total area of 5.432 square kilometer is one of the biggest cities in which 15 million people can live in per square kilometer. The highest point of İstanbul is the Aydos Hill which is on the Anatolian side. The Aydos Hill, which is 537 meter height, is the highest point that can see all of İstanbul. The population is settled down along the Marmara coast and Bosphorus coast in the south of both sides. Northern and interior parts are scarcely populated. These regions are the nice parts of İstanbul with their jungles and dams. Therefore, they are far from the city center. Transportation between two sides is provided through seaway and highway with the help of bridges. Moreover, there is a Golden Horn from the Marmara Sea towards the sea on the European side. There are bridges over the Golden Horn which helps transportation.
In addition, Maiden’s Tower which is located in the nearest land point of Uskudar district is a tiny islet that is among the most important beauties of Istanbul. These kinds of islets are used as a place of entertainment and restaurant.
