Khedive Pavilion

Khedive Pavilion is located within the boundaries of wide grove placed in Istanbul’s district, Beykoz. This pavilion is a historical structure in which the Egyptian Khedive Abbas Hilmi Pasha was living in a period. Khedive Pavilion was established on the thousand square meters area and has a view of the Bosporus, the fame of which transcends the borders of the country. “Steam elevator” placed in the tower has the feature of being the first elevators of the era. All trees of the grove have genealogy identifications. When entering for investigations into the Khedive Pavilion, it can be understood once again that Istanbul was the center of Ottoman Empire.

Khedive Pavilion with all rare architectural features was built by Abbas Hilmi Pasha who was the Egyptian Khedive (Egyptian Governor) at the end of the 19th century. Construction works started at the beginning of the 20th century and the most important factor of building the pavilion was that Abbas Hilmi Pasha had to come to the capital of the Ottoman for searching the Ottoman support against the sovereignty of the Anglo- Saxon in Egypt. Abbas Hilmi Pasha, the governor of Egypt, had to spend time in Istanbul for a while with the purpose of giving assistance, therefore, he bought a mansion built on two floors and made of wood in Çubuklu for the purpose of residence. Then he had to stay longer in Istanbul and he bought the two hundred and seventy acres land back of the mansion. Abbas Hilmi Pasha ordered to build a magnificent palace to Italian-born architect Delfo Seminati accordance with the architectural style of the period (art nouveau) in 1907. The palace, envied by the Sultan of the period, combines the peaks of the Bosporus’ two sides. There are many trees around the “Khedive Pavilion” and today species of plants and animals which are impossible to live in cities are found in the land of the pavilion.

On the entrance door of Khedive Pavilion, the Crown of Khedive with its moon and star is placed as the flag in the form of rigging. Khedive Pavilion with all its decorative arts affects you entering through the door. You can be sure that the Islamic, Ottoman and classical architectural style of the pavilion will lead you to the different realms. Khedive Pavilion has straight fronts towards the east and the half-moon shaped fronts towards the north and the west. In addition, the pavilion is a different work art with its foundation placed in the center.

In front of the entrance door overlooking the South, there is a hall. A large room, occurring in two rooms, is entered from the door corresponding to the right part of the hall. Kitchens are entered from the door placed on the left side of the hall.

Khedive Pavilion makes you fall in love itself with the magnificent bedroom climbing the marble staircases at the end of the hall. If you don’t stair and if you walk along the hall, you will encounter the memorial fountain. The open-top fountain’s above is closed with the aid of a glassed lantern, which is a hand-made work of art. The fountain called as “monument of art” is decorated with a total sixteen marble columns about two feet tall.

An elevator which upstairs the bedroom can be seen at the part located directly behind the marble fountain. The elevator’s front side is decorated with ornaments made of yellow brass. Glasses at the first floor are made of crystal and they are the shape of prism.

A saloon made of entirely marble is located at east facing of the building and on the right side of the hall which we have mentioned. After passing through a door, a marble corridor extending to the right and left welcomes you with all the beauty. If you continue to walk down the hall to the left-hand, you can pass to the crystal chandeliers hall and then to the Marble Hall overlooking the crystal chandeliers hall with the aid of a large window.

Marble Hall of Khedive Pavilion

You can reach the Marble Hall by downstairs a few steps and you can see another fountain on the right side of the marble hall. The fountain showing the most beautiful applications of the mosaic art is flowing on a boat made of marble. Water flows to the marble boat from a figure of frog instead of a fountain.

However, in the opposite of the downstairs into the living room, windows attached to the huge iron frames are placed. You can pass to the section called as “inner garden” using the door next to the windows.

All the marble columns which are found in this hall were polished a kind of lacquer still undetected. When lighting the colorful flower figured chandeliers carefully placed into the marble columns, the mysterious colors that can be felt you as a hero of a fairy tale appear. Almost all the furniture used in marble hall is made entirely of marble.

Hundreds roses are used for completing the décor of the inner garden and for creating a magical environment.

Concave Hall (Fire Hall)

The opposite direction of the “pool center area” we have described in the previous sections, double fireplaces hall welcomes you; the hall shaped of “concave” forms the Northwest part of Khedive Pavilion. A terrace is allowed to pass with a huge door made of marble from this Concave Hall.

All flooring of the hall was made of wood mahogany colored. Crystal chandeliers are located on the ceiling of this hall. All furniture is appropriate to the period when it was built and the furniture has managed to come up to now without any change and damage.

The marble columns of the terrace which we have mentioned recently are support to remain standing of the bedroom the upper floor.

Crystal Hall

A door in the part so called “Pool center area” is a transition to Khedive Pavilion’s dining halls. The dining room is referred to by name of “Crystal Hall” because it is adorned with crystal embellishments. The ceiling of the halls decorated with flowers figures made of golden; in addition, the hall is one of the most precious places. Crystal Hall, equipped with totally mirrors, can be characterized as an insatiable art with its brass lanterns. The hall’s fabric panels are commendable in worth.

Wood Hall

“Wood Hall” is made of wood materials mahogany colored. The hall also is assumed that wood art looks how beautiful built by skillful hands.

Pool Road

The part, “Pool Road”, enables the transition to all halls and rooms of Khedive Pavilion. In addition, the road is the evidence that construction of the pavilion was built with so much care.

 

First floor

The first floor situated on the marble hall includes in six rooms. Three of the rooms provide opportunity to watch the rose garden called as “inner garden” from marble balconies in front of the rooms. However, the other three rooms are located in the other side of the hall which connects the six rooms because of the remaining the interior part.

There are two rooms on the Concave Hall, located in the sub-floor. The rooms are contained in two large bedrooms in themselves. In addition, these rooms have their own toilets and bathrooms. The ceilings of the rooms are decorated with unique samples of wooden art. Abbas Hilmi Pasha was residing in one of these rooms. A huge wardrobe covers the two walls of the room, used by Egypt Khedive Abbas Hilmi Pasha. One of the wardrobes’ doors, which has a mirror on it, serves as a secret passage. The passage can be used in case of an emergency and accessed the middle hole on the same floor. The chair in the room of Abbas Hilmi Pasha allows you to use in emergency thanks to its art-deco function.

The towers

Accessing the tower of Khedive Pavilion known as “large observation tower” enables with a steam elevator located on the first floor hall. If you say that I can’t rely on the elevator, you can prefer to use the folding ladder covered with iron enclosure and made of wood. Large observation tower consists of an outdoor terrace and a mid-floor with balcony.

The other observation tower can be reached by walking through end of the corridor after reaching the service floor. This observation tower called as “Cihannüma” is protected with the drop-down shutters with the help of leverage. Around the tower can be watched from the three fronts but a front side of the roof not only positioned to spy.

The steps of the staircases and the doors of the tower are produced by an imported tree called as “Romania Fir”. The doors are decorated with using first class pitch pines hand-made.

Especially from the tower described as “large observation tower”, you can watch the two most extreme point of the Bosporus.

Today, the Pavilion of Khedive

Khedive Pavilion which had inherited from Abbas Hilmi Pasha to the present day is one of the most popular historic sites to witness to the unique and semi- panoramic view of Istanbul.

Khedive Pavilion, restored by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, offers visitors a unique opportunity for eating in the restaurants served in all halls of the pavilion. The restaurants are home to many flavors as multiple-choice menu during the week, Sunday breakfast, Sunday lunch buffet with the seventy kinds of food. In addition, the pavilion continues to add different meaning to your special days with the rooms which have a capacity of twenty-five staff and halls for four hundred people.
